What we do
Shepway Sports Trust is a not for profit sports charity that promotes high quality competition, sporting and coaching opportunities. Our key aim is to connect schools, sports clubs and the community of Shepway with a single purpose; to inspire all generations to lead healthy and active lifestyles.
At Shepway Sports Trust, we feel passionately about our core areas- school sport, sports clubs and communities. It is our strong belief that to truly offer sporting opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, we need to cover all bases in these three areas.
Our strategy is to identify existing activity, support it and add value to it where necessary. We also identify the gaps; if there is something missing from any of these areas we look to implement additional activity ensuring there are opportunities available for everyone.
Finally and most importantly, we work to ensure that these three areas are all connected.

Who we are
Laurence Hickmott – Chief Executive
Being Chief Executive for Shepway Sports Trust is a privilege and honour for me. I grew up and went to school in Shepway and was heavily involved in sport locally until I moved away from the area at the age of 16. The area has always been close to my heart so I have real enthusiasm and passion to make a positive difference to sport and physical activity in Shepway.
I began my career as a Sports Coach and PE Coordinator in a primary school in the London Borough of Lambeth. It was here that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in sports development and took up a role working with the London Borough of Lewisham as a Club and School Links Development Officer. After a successful period in this role I was promoted to the position of Partnership Development Manager for the Lewisham School Sports Partnership. I then moved on from Lewisham to become the Project Manager for the Camden Sports Academy with the London Borough of Camden. In all of these roles I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience within the school and sports development sector and I am now proud to have the opportunity to bring this to the Shepway Sports Trust.
Whilst I acknowledge that this will be a challenging role, I am sure that over time, our positive work with our partner schools, clubs and organisations will enable us to vastly increase, broaden and improve the sporting opportunities throughout Shepway.
Rhiannon Dance – Marketing and Communications Manager
Having worked in digital marketing for a number of years, I am excited to be working with Shepway Sports Trust heading up marketing and communications.
I currently run the social media channels for Shepway Sports Trust as well as working with stakeholders, the press and members of the local community to spread the message of our work.
I am passionate about the development of the local community in Shepway, through pathways to sport. I am also a keen horse rider and support local riding clubs and centres across the district.
James Sheridan – School Sport Manager
I have been competing in the sport of Bike Trials for 10 years now and have achieved some great results. In this time I have been sponsored by some of the biggest Bike Trial brands in the world.
I am proud to be a Shepway Sports Trust Ambassador and committed to inspiring young people to take up sport. I have also been lucky enough to join the Trust as a full time staff member, working to support the school sport scheme and inspire young people.
In my spare time I like to show my skills on the badminton court and spend too much time on my Xbox!

Aidan Willis – Projects and Volunteer Manager
I first started working with Shepway Sports Trust while still at Canterbury Christchurch University where I graduated with a BSC Honours in Physical Education & Sport Science.
After my degree finished, the opportunity arose to join the Trust on a permanent basis and I haven’t looked back since. I now spend my time coordinating the Active Communities section for the Trust alongside other sporting pursuits.
In my spare time I run my own football team and am an active Ambassador for Kent FA Youth Council.
Jordon Mann – Active Communities Manager
I joined SST in October 2015 as the Lead Activator for the Kent Sport netball project where we created Tri-Fusion Netball – a variation of netball which was designed to engage women and young girls in sport.
I’m really excited to now be joining the team as the Active Communities Manager for SST, where I will be looking to implement lots of new opportunities for the community to get active! If you have any ideas for what sports you’d like to see in Shepway, get in touch

Barry Pluck – General Manager
Hi my name is Barry Pluck and I am the Shepway Sports Trust General Manager.
I have had a passion for sport for as long as I can remember but the two sports which have been my greatest passion have been boxing and motorsport. I boxed competitively for Folkestone Amateur Boxing Club from the age of 15-21 and then decided to pursue my other passion and raced 2 stroke karts for 10 years travelling the country winning two club championships along the way. Apart from running to keep fit my main sporting focus in more recent times is as a boxing coach at Folkestone Amateur Boxing Club and since becoming a coach I have found the challenge and excitement in seeing others do well through my contribution is just as rewarding as competing yourself.
As well as coaching I am also responsible for the day to day running of the boxing club. Having active experience in running a local sports club puts me in a good position to help other clubs. I feel very privileged to be working for such a great charity and aim to help as many clubs as I can to make Shepway the leaders in terms of sports development and what we do within our community.
